THE MYTHS ABOUT LEADERSHIP

1.LEADERSHIP IS A RARE SKILL.

2.LEADERS ARE BORN NOT MADE.

3.LEADERS ARE CREATED BY EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES.

4.LEADERSHIP EXISTS ONLY AT THE TOP OF ORGANIZATIONS.

5.LEADERSHIP IS ALL ABOUT CONTROL—leadership is not the exercise of power, but the ability to empower.

6.ALL LEADERS ARE CHARISMATIC

7.IT IS IMMORAL TO SEEK POWER— Power is really a means to an end.  It is really like energy and like energy it is how it is used that matters.  Power is neutral.

LEADERSHIP: The ability to turn a dream, a vision, of a desired future state into reality with and through the cooperation of other people.  Compared this to definition in the textbook in Chapter 11.

1.A CLEAR SENSE OF PURPOSE: The leader knows what needs to be done.

2.LEADERS ARE PERSISTENT: They are willing to do whatever it takes to realize their purpose.

3.SELF-KNOWLEDGEABLE: Keen understanding of own strength weaknesses and skills and abilities.

4.LEADERS ARE PERPETUAL: Leaders make the effort to be informed, to develop new skills and strength old ones.

5.LEADERS LOVE THEIR WORK: They see work as adventurer and are continually renewed by it.

6.LEADERS HAVE UNCANNY ABILITY TO ATTRACT AND ENERGIZE PEOPLE: Leaders can draw and unite people around a unify effort.

7.LEADERS ARE MATURE IN HUMAN RELATIONS: Leaders can Establish relationships based on trust, respect and caring.

8.LEADERS ARE RISK TAKERS: Leaders are willing to explore and Experiment with resources that may serve the ultimate purpose.

9.LEADERS ARE FAIL SAFE: Leaders can transform even the most serious mistakes into learning experiences.

10.LEADERS ARE FOLLOWERS: Leaders are guided always by the human needs they seek to serve.
