CSUSF Social Simulation Models Project

1. In NetLogo (desktop;

https://ccl.northwestern.edu/netlogo/

. the web-version. has only some of he models), go to [Files] => [Models Library]

2. Type in or select the model you wish to run.

3a. As a first step, always FIRST read the info tab to understand what is happening in each simulation

3b. Keep in mind that you may need to re-open a new version of the model each time you move on to a new question, even if it’s for the same model, so the changes you made to the settings in one question don’t accidentally carry over into the next question.

3c. The ‘given parameters’ are the ones preset each time you open a new model

3d. The speed at which the simulation is run can be changed by the slider at the top (“normal speed”)

3e. These simulations are the outcome of probabilistic models. When running a simulation, you may get a result that could be an outlier. To get a solid average result, run each simulation multiple times to create a small data set before answering the question.

3f. If you don’t find the model, use the build-in search function of the “Models Library”. Please feel free to explore

1. Model: Rebellion

What do the triangles represent in this 2-dimensional simulation of this model?
A. Cops
B. Jailed agents
C. Space
D. Agents
2. Model: Rumor mill

For this simulation keep eight-mode off. Click on setup-one, then click on
spread-rumor-with-mouse to turn it on, then click on each corner of the
simulation once. There should be a total of 5 individuals. Then run the
simulation by clicking go. Record the time it took for the clique to reach 100%
and the shape of the rumor spread and successive differences graph. Now
click setup-one to restart the simulation: this time, add 4 individuals as close to
the individual in the center as possible. (hover the mouse over graphs to get
accurate data points).
What is a true statement about the two simulations that were run?
A. The simulation with the individuals in the corners is faster to run to 100%
than the individuals in the center
B. The successive differences graphs had different trends
C. The rumor spread graphs had different trends
D. Time for the clique to reach 100% is the same
3. Model: Hotelling’s Law

What will happen in this simulation if stores are only able to change their
location? To test this, set the simulation to 2 stores in a ‘plane’ layout, and
change the rules to ‘moving-only’. After changing the parameters click setup
then go to run the simulation. Test your theory multiple times till you are
convinced you have the right answer.
A. The stores have an equal area
B. One store out competes the other store
C. The stores slowly migrate to the right
D. One store will have higher prices
4. Model: Hotelling’s Law
READ Model Info (Info tab)!
What happens when the number of stores increases from 2 to 3? Keep the
layout on a plane with normal rules and run the model several times with an
increasing number of stores. After changing the parameters click setup then go
to run the simulation. Test your theory multiple times till you are convinced
you have the right answer.
A. The revenue per store increases
B. The revenue per store decreases
C. Some stores are out-competed and must close
D. The prices generally went down
