Post at least 2 paragraphs responding to the
following prompts:
o
O
o
.
Describe the graph you selected from the video
on technology’s long tail including:
What does the graph show?
What values are on the y- and x-axis?
What is the overall pattern displayed
on the graph?
Approximate two points on the graph and write
these as ordered pairs. Determine the slope
between these two points. Be sure to show the
math you used to compute the slope value.
Interpret what this slope means as a rate of
change between the two variables. Be sure to
mention all key points on the graph as
presented.

The graph I chose from Chris Anderson’s 2004 TED
talk Technology’s long tail is the graph about the number
of Skype members. The chart shows the number of Skype
members from August 2003 through February 2004. The
x-axis on the chart shows the months from August 2003
through February 2004. The y-axis indicates the number
of users in the millions. The overall pattern shows that in
the first four months it slowly gained around 125 thousand
users. After the fourth month, the number of users
increased by a million per month.
The number of users in 2003 was around 1 million, and in
2004 it had approximately 4 million users. The difference
between 2003 and 2004 is one year. The order pairs are
(0,1) and (1,4). x1 = 0 y1 = 1 x2 = 1 y2 = 4
Slope:
Slope = m = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)
m = (4-1)/(1-0) = 3/1 = 3

Slope is 3
y-intercept:
To find y intercept I use the point (0,1)
• y=mx+b
• 1 = 3(0)+b
• b = 1
y-intercept is (0,1)
Our formula will now be y=3x+1
x-intercept:
0 = 3x+1
• 3x = -1
• X = – 1/3
x-intercept is (-1/3,0)
Estimated Skype users in 2025
To predict the estimated number of Skype users for 2025,
we will subtract the first year, 2003, minus 2025. This will
give us 22.
We will use our formula of y=3x+1 and plug in 22 as our x.
y=3(22)+1
y=66+1
y=67
The estimated number of onypuudurby 2025 will be 67

The estimated number of Skype users by 2025 will be 67
million users.
I don’t think the estimated number of users predicted for
2025 is accurate. Based on the article, Microsoft’s Skype
struggles have created a Zoom moment by Tom Warren,
says that during 2015 Microsoft said Skype had 300
million active users. This already surpasses what our
estimate for 2025 had predicted. In my opinion, I believe
that back in the early 2000’s they did not know just how
fast technology was going to develop. Unfortunately,
Microsoft acquired Skype at the same time as other chat
apps like Snapchat, WhatsApp, and Messenger were
becoming popular challenging Skype’s dominance
(Warren,2020). We have seen in the past year how
dependent most people became on Zoom and Microsoft
teams for school and work.
