Real BUFR PARABOLAS PROJECT
WE ARE SURROUNDED
This project is meant for you to understand that parabolas exist in the real world. It may be an object
in place, like an arched door, or it may represent something in motion, like shooting a basketball. You
will apply basic knowledge about quadratics to your real-life parabolas and create a poster (using
whole or half a posterboard or foam posterboard)
displaying two pictures of real-life parabolas and
specific details for each one.
You will need two pictures of real-life parabolas.
Look on the internet for two pictures of a real-life parabola or you can take a picture of one that you

internet, you can search for parabola architecture, motion, real life, projectiles, fountains, etc. Be
creative and fun with your choices.
Project in a flash:
Go to www.desmos.com and launch the calculator. Click the red “Start Graphing” button. You do
not need to create an account. Watch a short video on how to import your picture and create the
quadratic equation of your real-life parabola. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L09yzY7S_0 If
video does not play, please refresh your screen.
Once you finished with your first picture, click the “share” arrow in the upper right corner and print.
You will print your parabola with the picture and print the parabola without the picture.
Start over with your second picture and repeat the process.
.
Project details:
Add image to DESMOS as described previously. Click the “PLUS” button in the upper left side
and add your saved imaged.
• Add quadratic function to your picture. Click the “PLUS” button in the upper left side and add
f(x) expression
• Type as your equation: y = ax2 + bx + c then add all sliders (blue button below your equation)
Move the sliders around until your parabola fits over the picture. Your parabola should be very
close to the same shape as seen in your picture.
You might need to move your picture and the sliders to make them fit together. Click on the
middle of your picture to move it. Click on the corners to make the picture bigger or smaller.

Graph details:
After you have created your parabola, click on the parabola that you have graphed over your
You should see points on the parabola. You need to write down all these points:
VERTEX
Y-INTERCEPT
X-INTERCEPTS
Once you finished with your first picture. Click the “share” arrow in the upper right corner and
print. You will print your parabola with the picture and print the parabola without the
picture.
. Begin again with your second picture.
Posterboard details:
Make your poster neat, organized, creative, and informative. You have two pictures with two
sets of information
Glue or tape your 4 pictures to your posterboard:
2 with picture and matching parabola
2 with just the parabola by itself
The following information needs to be labeled on your posterboard for the two parabolas
without the real life picture:
Equation of the parabola
Vertex
y-intercept
x-intercepts
axis of symmetry equation
I want to see the calculation for each, the vertex, y-intercept, and x-intercepts on the
posterboard, details below……
.
Calculation details:
Your equation is written in standard form.
Calculate the vertex of your parabola using the vertext formula
-b
X=
2a
plug your X-value back into the equation to find the matching y-value
.
.
Calculate the y-intercept by using f(0) = ?
Calculate the x-intercepts by using the Quadratic Formula
X=
-b+vb2-4ac
2a
Write the equation for the axis of symmetry.
• Make sure all the calculation above are correct and labled what they are on your posterboard.
Calculations should be the same as the points you wrote down from the computer.
