You Write Here in the Middle, Using Calibri Font, Size 14
Bold, the Main Title of Your Assignment Report.
I.
Introduction
In this section, introduce your assignment, its purpose, and its relationship to your field of
specialisation (BIS). Also, give a short overview of the fictitious restaurant presented in the scenario,
focusing on the need for business analysis.
This section may just be written in two or three paragraphs, probably about 200 to 250 words.
Be sure to leave a blank line after each paragraph. As required, line spacing should be 1.5, the font
should be Calibri, size 11. You may discuss business analysis and its importance to a country’s economy
in general, and to businesses, in particular, in relation to your area of specialisation (BIS). Be sure to
cite your sources using the Harvard Style of Referencing. In addition, do not forget to cite the journal
paper uploaded in Moodle (Reading Assignment: Required Reference).
Another paragraph may be focused on the discussion of the scenario. Cite the importance of
effectively managing this kind of business and, from the scenario, discuss the problems and how could
these affect the business, the industry, and the country’s economy. Finally, verbalise your objectives.
II.
Research Methodology
Research methodology is the specific procedures or techniques used to identify, select,
process, and analyse information about a topic. In this section, specify and then justify your research
methodology of choice. Include in your discussion what data to collect (and what data to ignore),
whom to collect it from, how to collect it, and how to analyse the data. You may divide your discussion
into appropriate sub-sections.
The type of research methodology to use depends largely on how you want to approach or
tackle the problem you discussed in the previous section (Introduction). If you use a survey method,
that means you intend to collect a set of similar data from a large number of respondents using a
structured questionnaire. However, you need to be able to think at this point of some possible
solutions (this is where you hypothesise whether or not your solution would work) and what data you
need so that you can realise the solution or solutions you have in mind. Remember that there are other
research methodologies you can utilise, such as exploratory method, case study method, quasiexperimental method, or action research. Again, your choice depends largely on the type of solution
1
you have in mind and the type of data you need in order to realise such solution. Also, discuss in this
section the importance or necessity of your adherence to the research ethical principles.
Finally, include in this section how you would analyse, present, and interpret the data you have
collected.
Note: You may divide your discussion into appropriate sub-sections.
III.
External Analysis
External analysis means examining the industry environment of a company, including factors
such as competitive structure, competitive position, dynamics, and history. On a macro scale, external
analysis includes macroeconomic, global, political, social, demographic, and technological analysis both tangible and intangible – such as resources, assets, and processes. The primary purpose of
external analysis is to determine the opportunities and threats in an industry or any segment that will
drive profitability, growth, and volatility.
Industry Definition and Profile
In this section, you need to do an industry scanning to identify the industry to which World
Fusion belongs – in this case, the Food Service Industry (which includes Restaurants, Eateries,
Diners, Cafeterias, Fast Food Chains, Cafes, Snack Bars, etc.). Discuss and give insight about
this industry – where it came from and where it appears to be going. For example, do you think
starting a restaurant business is a good idea? Why or why not? How do you think restaurants
are doing today, based on your research? These are just some of the questions you may answer
in this section.
Macro-environmental Analysis
There are several methods used in external analysis. You may use only one method or a
combination of two or more methods. However, the most commonly used methods are
Porter’s Five Competitive Forces Analysis, PESTLE or PEST Analysis, Strategic Group Mappings,
and Supply Chain Analysis. Whatever method you use, make your discussions clear, relevant,
and supported with facts from reputable sources. (Do not forget to correctly cite the sources
in Harvard Style). In general, the macro environment includes trends in the gross domestic
product (GDP), inflation, employment, spending, and monetary and fiscal policy. Research on
the different external factors that currently affect or in the future may affect Fusion World.
2
Identification of Opportunities & Threats
From the external analysis (Industry Scanning and Macro-environmental analysis) conducted
previously, list down the opportunities that Fusion World can take advantage of and the
threats that it has to be aware of and minimise. Refer to the sample given in Wk08.L08 How
BAs Identify IS Business Needs – Part 1.
IV.
Proposed Solution
In this section, identify an appropriate Information System that could take advantage of the
opportunities or minimise the impact of the threats identified in the previous section. For your
solution, give:
Overview of the Project.
Give a short description of the purpose of the project, focusing on how this project could
solve the problems previously identified. You may also specify here the type of information
system you propose – mobile application, web application, desktop application, hybrid
application, etc. – and the tools you plan to use to implement whatever application you have in
mind.
Aims and Objectives of the Project.
Verbalise the general and specific objectives of the project. The general objective would
be something you achieve once this research work gets completed, which you may have specified
in the very title of your research work.
The specific objectives refer to what you need to achieve in order to complete this research
project. Be sure to be SMART in your objectives.
V.
Literature Review
Objectively frame your proposed project within the wider academic and technical domain
literature, linking it to existing related work and key sources (minimum of 10 references) by conducting
a literature review with synthesis. Your literature review should include:
3
Theoretical Review
Clearly describe the framework, concepts, models, or specific theories that underpin your
proposed project. This includes noting who the key theorists are in the field who have researched
the problem you are investigating and, when necessary, the historical context that supports the
formulation of that theory.
Related Work/Similar Systems
Review 2 to 5 Information System applications which are similar or related to the system
you are proposing. Focus on the notable functions and features of the system reviewed.
Synthesis
Give a synthesis of the reviews conducted, relating these to the project at hand. Make
connections or put all the pieces of literature you reviewed together to show how the theories
and related works reviewed relate to the project.
VI.
Recommendation
Write a conclusion of the research activity. Highlight the key arguments you have presented –
the main problem and your proposed solution. Finally, recommend to OATS the best way to acquire
the Information System application you have proposed – purchase, develop in-house, outsource
partially or fully, etc. – and justify your recommendation.
Reference List
List down all the references you cited in the report using the Harvard style of referencing.
Make sure that the references you listed match the citations you made in the report.
